A classically-trained pianist, Keys began composing songs by age 12 and was signed at 15 years old by Columbia Records. After disputes with the label, she signed with Arista Records , and later released her debut album, Songs in A Minor , with J Records in The album was critically and commercially successful, producing her first Billboard Hot number-one single " Fallin' " and selling over 16 million copies worldwide. The album earned Keys five Grammy Awards in Keys released her first live album, Unplugged , and became the first woman to have an MTV Unplugged album debut at number one. Her third album, As I Am , produced the Hot number-one single " No One ", selling 7 million copies worldwide and earning an additional three Grammy Awards.

She is the youngest person and second person ever to win the four main Grammy categories — Best New Artist , Record of the Year , Song of the Year and Album of the Year — in the same year. In , Time magazine placed her on their inaugural "Time Next" list. While she was homeschooled , her mother taught her and Finneas the basics of songwriting. The song is about the zombie apocalypse, inspired by the television series The Walking Dead from which she took script lines and episode titles that she added to the song as part of the assignment.
